RIDERS UP

Putting Kentucky Derby Museum visitors in the saddle at a digitally recreated Churchill Downs, racing a nine-horse field from the gate to the wire.

Client: Kentucky Derby Museum
Location: Louisville, USA

THE CHALLENGE
A ride in the Derby for museum visitors

The Kentucky Derby is the most famous two minutes in sport, and the actual ride belongs to about twenty jockeys a year. For everyone else, even at the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs, the race is something you watch.
The museum wanted its visitors to feel it instead: the gate, the field, the dirt, the roar of the grandstands and the sprint for the wire.

THE IMMERSIVE IDEA
Churchill Downs from the saddle

Riders Up puts visitors in the race. We recreated Churchill Downs digitally, from the twin spires to the packed race-day grandstands, and dropped riders into a nine-horse field on the famous dirt.
The name comes from the call that starts every Derby, and that is the promise of the experience: this time, you are the one riding.

WHY XR?
Making the ride a skill, not a video

A film about the Derby washes over you. Riders Up demands something: riders manage their horse’s stamina, find their rhythm, pick their moment and time their boost for the final stretch.
Those game mechanics are what make the experience replayable and competitive. Position in the field is tracked from gate to wire, so every run has a result, and every result invites another go.

INSIDE THE EXPERIENCE
From the gate to the final stretch

The race unfolds like the real thing: break from the gate, settle into the field, hold your line through the turns and unleash everything when the final stretch opens up.
A stamina system rewards riders who pace their horse, while the boost meter charges toward the sprint that decides the finish. Cross the wire and the position board tells you exactly how your Derby ended.

THE IMPACT
The most famous two minutes, now rideable

Riders Up gives the Kentucky Derby Museum a centrepiece that turns visitors from spectators into competitors, with the kind of replayability that keeps queues moving and groups challenging each other.
It extends what a sporting museum can offer: not just the story of the race and its history, but the closest thing to riding it.
